Breast Reduction Surgery — Post-Operative Instructions
Carefully follow your surgeon’s post-operative guidelines to support healing and optimize surgical results. Mild swelling, bruising, and temporary discomfort are expected and will gradually subside during recovery.
First 24 Hours After Surgery
- Rest with upper body elevated using 2–3 pillows.
- Sleep on your back only.
- Start with sips of water after 4 hours, light meals after 6 hours if tolerated.
- Drink plenty of fluids and reduce salt intake.
- No smoking, vaping, or alcohol.
- Wear surgical bra at all times unless instructed otherwise.
- Take short walks every 2 hours while awake.
- Avoid lifting, bending, pushing, or pulling.
- Do not drive.
Preventing Dizziness
- Before standing, sit at the edge of the bed and let your legs hang for 2–3 minutes.
- Take deep breaths before standing.
- Stand slowly with support if needed.
- Have someone nearby during the first 24 hours.
If Dizziness Occurs
- Sit or lie down immediately.
- Elevate legs slightly.
- Take slow deep breaths.
- Drink fluids once stable.
- Contact your doctor if dizziness continues or you faint.
48 Hours After Surgery
- You may shower after 48 hours. Let water run gently over incisions and pat dry.
- Reapply surgical bra immediately.
- Swelling peaks around days 3–5.
- Bruising and mild itching are normal.
- Breasts may look high, firm, or uneven initially.
- No gym, running, or swimming for 2 weeks.
- Continue sleeping on your back.
- Light desk work may resume in 3 days if comfortable.
- Physically demanding work requires 3 weeks.
Medications at Home
Take medications exactly as prescribed. Take tablets after food to reduce gastric irritation. Do NOT combine Tramadol and Panadol Night. Do NOT take Tramadol after midnight to prevent next-day dizziness.
What Is Normal
- Swelling and bruising.
- Tightness.
- Temporary asymmetry.
- Mild clear or pink drainage.
- Nipple sensitivity changes.
Call the Doctor Immediately If You Notice
- Sudden swelling in one breast.
- Severe increasing pain.
- Bright red bleeding.
- Fever above 38°C.
- Foul-smelling discharge.
- Shortness of breath or chest pain.
Healing Expectations
- Final breast shape settles over 3–6 months.
- Scars improve over 6–12 months.
- Avoid smoking for at least 4 weeks.
- Maintain stable weight.
- Attend all follow-up appointments.
