calf implants/ calf augmentation

The calf has two muscles: the largest and most visible muscle is called the gastrocnemius, with the smaller soleus muscle (which can’t be seen) located below this. The gastrocnemius muscle is located on the back of the leg and consists of two parts, each part running down the sides of the leg from each side of the femoral bone just above the knee to the Achilles tendon at the heel.

During the surgery, which is performed under light, or ‘twilight’, sedation and local anesthesia on an outpatient basis, the surgeon may insert one or two calf implants to each leg, depending on the anatomical and aesthetic requirement of the individual patient. The silicone implants are placed in pockets overlying the existing gastrocnemius muscles by means of small incisions made in the creases behind the knee. Depending on the desired effect, the inner head, outer head, or both, can be enlarged on one or both legs to make the existing musculature appear larger and more defined.

Calf augmentation surgery usually takes between one to two hours to complete but this will vary depending on the individual needs of the patient and the extent of the surgery required. Afterwards, the patient will need to take between one to two weeks leave from work as their mobility will be greatly reduced; full mobility should be regained within two to four weeks and the final result will be evident between two to three months, after all swelling has subsided.
